The Pencil Drop
When responding to a writing prompt, have the students drop their pencils on the ground when they have completed the task. You won’t believe how MANY giggles and guilty looks you will get.

Students' Choice
Have each student call on the next student to answer your lesson questions. This motivates them to stay focused, and they enjoy calling on others!

Thumbs Up
Teacher stands at the front of the room and gives the class a thumbs up; the class responds, as each student notices, with a thumbs up directed toward the teacher. Those students who respond early will quickly get frustrated with those who are slow to focus and encourage them to adjust their behavior.
